PROGRAM OVERVIEW

 

The Medical Assistant program prepares students to learn the many skills of administrative and clinical medical assisting, including Medical Front Office and Phlebotomy. Students are taught to prepare patients for examination and treatment, perform various laboratory tests, and manage patient records. The program also offers work-based learning in a medical office or clinic. Students will learn how to:

 

  • Perform medical office administrative tasks including answering telephones, screening calls for triage, scheduling patients, checking patients in and out for treatment, obtaining consent for treatment, obtaining financial informaion and verifying insurance, managing patient records, and medical terminology.
  • Perform approved clinical techniques including obtaining vital signs, administering medications, performing 12 leads EKG, performing injections suck as intramuscular, subcutaneous and intradermal, and collecting blood for testing (Phlebotomy/Venipuncture).
  • Perform Medical/Surgical Asepsis.
  • Follow HIPAA guidelines and regulations.
  • Perform medical office laboratory procedures and diagnostic testing.
  • Perform pre-exam procedures such as vision and audiometry testing. 

 

The program includes a work-based learning component that includes real world, hands-on clinical training in a medical office, clinic, or urgent care setting. 

Students are required to travel to Redlands three weekends during the program for Phlebotomy and Venipuncture training. 

Students that successfully complete the program will receive a Certificate of Completion and will be eligible to apply for the California Certified Medical Assistant (CCMA) Exam.

Prerequisite/Requirements for Enrollment:

  1. Must show proof of a negative tuberculosis immunization or chest X-ray by first day of class; recommended Hep B immunization
  2. Must complete the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) Exam and receive an appropriate score of 5 or higher
  3. Must present a government issued ID & Social Security Card

Clinical Training: Work based experiences are an integral part of most licensing programs. Medical Assistant students are required to participate in administering direct patient care under the guidance of an instructor.  Students are assessed in their knowledge, skills, and work habits. Clinical training sites are pre-arranged by the program instructor and are established by a contract with the clinical facility.
